【華府消息】針對柯林頓總統在北大演講，回答有關「和平統一」台灣的問題，台灣國際關係中心蔡武雄於6月29日向白宮柯林頓總統辦公室提出嚴重抗議，指出柯林頓總統的失言。
蔡武雄指出美國的中國政策一向只堅持台灣問題應該「和平解決」，這個解決方案絕不是「和平統一」而已，尚且包括民主和台灣的自決。美國的外交政策是「和平解決」，不是「和平統一」。
蔡武雄在六月十八日已寫信敦促柯林頓總統拒絕中國「三不政策」的無理要求，並且不可出賣台灣人民的福祉和利益，同時希望美國政府本持人權、民主和自決原則尊重台灣人民的權益。當天在華府近千人由國會遊行抗議到白宮之後，蔡武雄與白宮交涉並與其他旅美台灣人社團代表向白宮呈遞二千多封請願的信。
北大演講柯林頓總統的失言令許多關心的台灣人紛紛向白宮抱怨抗議。蔡武雄主任呼籲同鄉多多寫信向美國政府表達台灣人自決的心聲。
Dear Mr. President,
I am writing to communicate our extreme displeasure and disappointment with the speech that you gave at Beijing University on June 29, 1998. In a response to a question, you said that “United States policy is not an obstacle to the peaceful reunification of China and Taiwan.”
I must take issue with your diction. “Reunification” in reference to aiwan has never been in the vocabulary of American policy toward China. merican policy has always been in favor of a peaceful “resolution.” but ever in favor of a “reunification.”
Mr. President, by introducing “reunification,” you are succumbing to Chinese pressures and rejecting Taiwanese democracy. We urge you not to mprove relations with China at the expense of the people of Taiwan. It is mperative that you do not forget the lofty ideals that American foreign policy is based on.
Mr. President, I know I don’t have to remind you that the basic rinciples of self-determination and democracy which you ignored in you peech at the Beijing University are enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations and the Taiwan Relation Act.
I urge you to stand firm in you support of democracy, self -determination, and Taiwan.
