We, the members of eighteen Taiwanese-American organizations, gather here in front of the White House today to demonstrate against Chinese President Hu Jintao. We wish to call international attention to the fact that a repressive China is threatening a democratic Taiwan, in particular with 800 missiles targeting the peaceful island nation. China is rapidly building up its military capabilities in order to enforce its sinister “anti-secession law” which aims to annex Taiwan and thus depriving the 23 million Taiwanese people of their human right to self-determination. China’s military expansion also threatens peace and stability of the western Pacific and is contrary to the U.S. national interests.
We demand that Hu dismantle the 800 missiles and renounce the use of force against Taiwan. We support a free, democratic and independent Taiwan, and call on President George Bush to persuade Hu to normalize China’s relations with Taiwan. We also urge the nations of the world to stop isolating Taiwan, and to accept the free and democratic Taiwan as a full and equal member of the international community.
In today’s protest against Hu’s visit, the Taiwanese-American organizations are honored to be joined by the Students for a Free Tibet, International Tibet Independence Movement, Uyghur American Association and Laogai Research Foundation. In solidarity, we jointly voice our strong opposition to China’s disregard for democracy and human rights and to its contempt for the sovereignty of neighboring countries.
